Murat Gökmen is an Emmy award winning filmmaker working in commercials, branded content, short film and documentary. After studying Modern Languages (BA in French and Spanish) at Oxford University and Television Journalism (MA) at City University, London, Murat began his career as a researcher working across several programmes for Channel 4’s flagship documentary strand, Dispatches. During his time at Dispatches, Murat’s work increasingly involved shooting as well as research and in 2012 he decided to go freelance as an independent filmmaker working as a director, producer, camera op and editor. Nine years on, Murat directed films for agencies and brands including Google, H&M, Audi, Polestar, Ancestry, CRUK, BBH and Karmarama, and has made films for platforms including The New York Times, Red Bull TV, Channel 4, ITV, Condé Nast and Vice.
Murat's been listed for a One World Media Award for his short documentary about the fishermen of Gaza, Sayadeen, and as a Producer he was part of the team that won an Emmy for The New York Times documentary, The Forger. His first narrative short as Writer and Director, Talk To Leon, premiered at the Oscar qualifying Flickers Rhode Island Film Festival in August 2019 and went to on to be screened at festivals around the world including the BAFTA qualifying London Short Film Festival in January 2020. Talk To Leon’s festival run ended in May 2021 at Shortie Film Festival in New York where he won Best Director.
